In its first year of production, the Cadillac Motor Car Company created what was to serve as their reputation for more than a century. It began with Henry Martyn Leland who partnered with financier and visionary Robert C. Faulconer. Together they represented the early future of the automotive industry. In 1901, the pair was contracted to design a revised engine for the Oldsmobile Curved Dash Runabout, and that they did – so much so that Oldsmobile turned it down because of the increased cost it presented for Oldsmobile to retool the necessary machinery. Ironically, the same gentlemen who had been financing a young Henry Ford would welcome the pair only a year later, backing their venture into the fledging motor car market. By 1902, the first Cadillacs were on the road and by all reports they were years ahead of the competition in their fit, finish, quality and style. The first Cadillacs were offered as a Runabout either with or without a tonneau. The single-cylinder Model As were rated at only 6.5 horsepower; however, they actually produced as much as 10 horsepower with a displacement of 98 cubic inches. The 1903 Cadillac Model A Runabout offered here is an outstanding example. It was the very first car ever to win a National Senior Award from the CCCA back in 1975. Although it was a remarkably complete example, the Cadillac was treated to a complete and thorough concours level restoration by Charlie Moore, who formerly owned it. Upon completion, Moore was so proud of the Model A that he prominently displayed it for many years in his living room! Thereafter the car entered the respected collection of Mr. John McMullen, in whose ownership it was shown at the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. According to restorer and marque specialist Mr. Greg Tockett, this example is without a doubt the most accurate and certainly one of the finest 1903 Cadillacs extant.Still in outstanding condition, the Model A is finished in original Cadillac colours, black with dark red accents with a black top and matching diamond tufted leather seats. Fitted with a Phare Solar Model 27A driving light, a pair of brass side lamps, a rear mounted lamp, a pair of wicker baskets and the rear entry tonneau, the Cadillac is “fully loaded” by 1903 standards, as it possesses all the available options for that year and comes with a detachable tonneau. It has since entered a private German collection and is offered with an entry into this year’s London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, where it will undoubtedly prove a capable and delightful participant.
